VICTOR VELA
PHARR – Victor Vela, 48, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December 2, 2017, at his residence in Pharr.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Porfiria and Jesus Vela; maternal grandmother, Maria Rodriguez; maternal grandfather, Benny Egly.
Victor is survived by the joy of his life, his son Jacob Vela; his loving parents, Emilio and Janice Vela; five sisters, Jo (Denny) Griffith, Belinda Vela, Leticia Gonzalez, Gloria Vela, Lydia (Robert) Macheska; a brother, Emilio (Yvette) Vela Jr.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; and Jacob’s mother, Stella Flores.
Victor was a kind and loving person who had a contagious smile and enjoyed being with his family and friends. He was loved by all his nephews and nieces and will always be remembered for his thoughtfulness and loving spirit. Victor especially loved spending time with his son Jacob, who was his pride and joy, and cherished his time on the baseball field coaching him. He had fond memories of his childhood and often shared stories which always included his siblings and cousins.
Victor was a 1987 graduate of Pharr-San Juan-Alamo (PSJA Bears) High School and attended UTPA. He excelled in athletics throughout his high school years and was a top Valley baseball player. This earned him a scholarship to play on the UTPA Baseball team. Baseball was a lifelong passion of his. Victor also umpired baseball youth games for the City of Pharr. He loved his family, baseball, and was a New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys fan.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, December 7, 2017, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Pharr. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr. Pallbearers will be Jessie Gonzalez Jr., Oscar J. Gonzalez, Mark A. Gonzalez, Anthony Cavazos, Emilio Vela III, Brendan Vela, Emilio Vela Jr. and Robert Macheska. Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Cavazos and Jacob Vela.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
