PHARR - Julian S. Vela, 83, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Friday, July 3, 2009 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen.
Born in Pawnee, Texas, Mr. Vela had lived in Pharr most of his life and was a founding member of St. Anne's Catholic Church in Pharr.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ascencion and Eufemia Vela; two brothers, Miguel and Enrique Vela; and a sister, Dora Escobar.
Mr. Vela is survived by his wife, Martina S. Vela of Pharr; six children, Abel Vela, Dr. Leonel (Alicia) Vela, both of McAllen, Delia (Jack) Alaniz of San Juan, Dalia (Alex) Leal, Julian Vela, Jr., both of Pharr and Estela (Jesus) Franco of Palmview; 17 grandchildren: Kara, Jessica, Abel Jr., Monica, Leonel Jr., Clarisa, Adrian, Isaac, Arturo, Jack Jr., Krysta, Faith, Alejandro Jr., Vanessa, Tony, Jesus Jr., and Jennifer; a great-grandchild, Astryd; two brothers, Justo Vela of Garland, Texas, Ascencion Vela of San Juan; two sisters, Eufracita Rodriguez and Julia Zuniga, both of Pharr; and two half sisters, Maria Guadalupe Pena Sifuentes of Irving, Texas and Lydia "Lilly" Rodriguez of Victoria, Texas.
The family would like to thank his physicians, Dr. Juan Campos, Dr. Javier Campos, Dr. Hector Soto, Dr. KV Chowdary, Dr. Juan Rivera, Dr. Miguel Walter Montes, Dr. Ricardo Garcia; First Choice IPH Home Health; and Rio Grande Regional Hospital ICU Professional Staff for the care given to our father.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., today, July 4, 2009 at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan and from 6 to 10 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, Sunday, July 5, 2009 at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Pharr. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Monday, July 6, 2009 at St. Anne's Catholic Church officiated by Father Genaro Henriquez. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr. Pallbearers will be Leonel A. Vela, Jr., Abel Vela, Jr., Arturo Alaniz, Alejandro Leal, Jr., Isaac Vela and Jack R. Alaniz, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Adrian Vela, Tony Leal and Jesus Franco, Jr.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
