MARIA ENRIQUETA CANCHE VASQUEZ
McALLEN – Maria “Keta” Vasquez, 79, died peacefully March 20, 2018, at her residence in McAllen after a lengthy illness.
Born and raised in Alamo, Keta was a 1957 graduate of PSJA High School. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s from Pan American University. She later earned her Doctorate in Early childhood from The University of Texas at Austin. As a long-time educator, her passion for learning gave her ample opportunities to teach in many states. Throughout her career, Keta co-authored educational based books with her husband and was an advocate of higher education for Latinos.
Keta was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and lived by her strong spiritual beliefs. It was her love of God and family that gave her the strength to continue living her life to the fullest, even after her illness. Her greatest joy was to attend her grandchildren’s academic and athletic events.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Keno Vasquez; a daughter, Doria E. Vasquez; her parents, Fernando and Leopolda Canche; and six siblings.
Mrs. Vasquez is survived by three children, Yliana Olivia (Larry) Esparza of McAllen, Michelle (Scott) Walters of Cary, Illinois, Keno (Celina) Vasquez of Palmhurst; nine grandchildren, Christopher Esparza, Lauren Esparza, Anthony Esparza, Nicole Walters, Jacklyn Walters, Daniella Walters, Olivia Vasquez, Alejandro Vasquez, Andrea Vasquez; and seven siblings, Amelia (Ernesto) Ayala of Pharr, Odilia Farias, Idalia Canche, Rodolfo (Rachel) Canche, all of Alamo, Arnoldo (Lucia) Canche of Edinburg, Hector (Janie) Canche, Nellie (Roy) Rivera, both of McAllen.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Thursday, March 22, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 East Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2018, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in McAllen. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
