FLORENTINO VALDEZ
SAN JUAN - Florentino Valdez, 85, of San Juan passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018. Florentino was born on June 10, 1932 in Cadereyta, NL, Mexico, and had lived in San Juan for over 60 years. He is preceded in death by his sons, Humberto and Carlos Valdez; his parents; and six siblings.
Florentino is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mercedes G. Valdez; six children, Berta (Andres +) Martinez, Santiago (Silvia) Valdez, Sandra (Lauro) Luera, Rosalva (Jesus) Liscano, Jose (Traci +) Valdez, Diana Valdez; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one sister.
Florentino worked many years as a cement construction worker. He worked on the Queen Isabella Bridge and the Expressway many years ago. He and his wife would often join their compadres and comadres at the Triple City Ballroom for a night of laughter and dancing. He loved being a grandfather and sitting outside watching his grandkids play. When we visited if he wasn’t outside he was sitting on his favorite chair surfing the TV. He was an avid baseball fan and this year he truly enjoyed it because his Astros won the World Series. He will be remembered by his family for his love of baseball, his barbequing skills, and his witty comments.
Pallbearers will be Vicente Martinez, Andres Martinez Jr., Lauro Luera III, Joe Michael Luera, Santiago Valdez Jr., and Carlos Valdez III.
A rosary was held Monday, January 15, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish, 216 W 1st St. in San Juan. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
