EDINBURG - Ofelia V. Ruiz, 85, entered eternal rest surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, December 3, 2022, in Edinburg. Ofelia was born at El Tule Ranch and was a longtime resident of Edinburg. She married her high school sweetheart, Manuel L. Ruiz, Jr. in July of 1958 and have been inseparable ever since, a true example of love and devotion.

She was a teacher and before retirement she taught kindergarten at Jefferson Elementary School for over 30 years where she was loved by students and co-workers. One of her students shared that Ofelia had such an impact on so many throughout her years of teaching and stated, "I remember her making me feel safe and loved."

Her favorite Bible verse was, "Let Go and Let God" (Psalm 118:6) she lived her life with this unwavering faith in knowing that God is our refuge and strength.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Arnulfo and Maria Villarreal; a granddaughter Laura "Lori" Elizabeth Ruiz; brothers, E.A. "Beto" (Anita) and Gilberto Villarreal; and four sisters, Lilia (Robert) Rutledge, Delia V. (Carlos) Villegas, Emma V. Vela, and Celia (Armando) Caceres.

Ofelia is survived by her loving husband, Manuel L. Ruiz, Jr.; sister-in-law Isaura Villarreal; her son, Manuel Lorenzo "Larry" Ruiz, III (Elizabeth); her three daughters, Linda Christine Cassell (+Terry), Lilia Cynthia Negrete (Agustin) and Laura Ruiz-Martinez (Joaquin "Jake"); nine grandchildren, Lorenzo Ruiz, Bryan Ruiz, Andrea Negrete, Thomas Negrete, Zoe Cassell, Gabriela Martinez, Miranda Negrete, Hannah Cassell and David Martinez.

The Ruiz family would like to thank the caregivers of Healthcare Unlimited, especially owner Joe Ramon, as well as Joe Govea and JoAnn Wright, and her loving niece, Dr. E. Linda Villarreal for the love, compassion, patience, and tender care they extended to Ofelia and our entire family.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m. rosary Thursday, December 8, 2022, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral mass will take place at 11:30 a.m. Friday, December 9, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.

Pallbearers are her grandsons, Bryan E. Ruiz, Thomas A. Negrete, David C. Martinez; her sons in law, Agustin Negrete, Joaquin S. Martinez; nephew Robert Rutledge Jr.; and Jaime Ayala.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Church Building Fund or St. Vincent de Paul, 114 West Fay, Edinburg, TX 78539.

Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
