AURORA S. PENA
EDINBURG – Loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Aurora S. Pena, 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Wednesday, February 28, 2018, at Amara Hospice in Edinburg.
She was born on April 15, 1930, in Garciasville, TX to Melquiades and Beatriz (Guerra) Silva, but lived in Edinburg most of her life.
Mrs. Pena is survived by her son, Roel “Roy” (Hortensia V.) Pena, a daughter, Edna (S.M. “Sam”) de la Garza; four grandchildren, Christina (Felix) Salazar, Sam (Minnie) de la Garza, Marcos (Anissa) de la Garza, Erika (Fred III) Palacios; eight great-grandchildren, Derek and Tessa de la Garza, Aidan and Ella Salazar, Lily, Ava and Federico IV Palacios, and Arianna de la Garza.
Being a devout catholic, she was very active in her church community of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. She served as a Eucharistic minister along with her husband for numerous years. Mrs. Pena was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and enjoyed volunteering at St. Joseph Catholic School cafeteria with Harriet Martin’s lunch group.
“Nanny” as she was lovingly called by her grandchildren, was the ultimate caretaker of all of her family for three generations. She proudly celebrated everyone’s birthdays and special occasions by baking her delicious homemade “Tropical Carrot Cake.” Although we are saddened by her leaving us, we are consoled that she has finished our Lord’s Mission.
The family would like to thank her caregivers, Francis Castillo, Margarita de Luna, Amara Hospice and Dr. Melva Palacios. A special heartfelt thank you to Father Greg Labus.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary, today, March 4, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2018, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.
Pallbearers will be Sam de la Garza, Marcos de la Garza, Felix Salazar, Fred Palacios III, Derek de la Garza and Aidan Salazar. Honorary pallbearer will Federico Palacios IV.
