Sonia A. Paredes

Sonia A. Paredes, 78, entered eternal rest Monday, July 25, 2022, at Avalon Memory Care in Edinburg.
Born in Santiago, Chile, Mrs. Paredes had lived in Edinburg since 1982 and was formerly employed by the University of Texas Pan American. In her free time, Mrs. Paredes enjoyed reading, knitting, cooking and watching professional soccer. Having immigrated to the United States with her husband in 1974, she raised three sons and supported her husband as he sought a Master's degree and PhD at The University of Utah. Although she loved her new country over the next 48 years, she never lost the love for her homeland of Chile. She showed her love for Chile whether it was teaching her children to love and respect their heritage, cooking Chilean dishes of empanadas and pastel de choclo, or welcoming and befriending new Chilean students attending The University of Texas Pan American.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Miguel Angel Paredes; and her parents, Humberto Barrera and Sofia Juare.
Sonia is survived by three sons, Miguel (Brenda) Paredes of McAllen, Marcelo (Claudia) Paredes, Mario Paredes, all of Edinburg; and seven grandchildren, Diego, Karla, Andrea, and Charis Paredes; and Dante, Serenity Nicole, and Maya Paredes.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m., with a 6 p.m. prayer service Thursday, July 28, 2022, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2022, at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Edinburg.
