Mario Alejo Cantu

With deep love and sorrow, the family of Mario Alejo Cantu announces his peaceful passing on Feb 24th, 2026.
Mario was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend whose kindness, humor and generous heart touched everyone who knew him.
Born July 17th 1939, he was from the Class of '58 and played football for his beloved PSJA Bears. He married his beloved wife Olivia in 1965 and they had two amazing children, Michelle Cantu Gonzalez and Mario Alejo Cantu Jr.
Mario worked for the State Comptroller and the US Marshalls for many years. When he retired he went and worked with his brother, Cruz Cantu, building homes. He loved hunting and fishing with all the Cantu Clan and his best friends, especially his son Mario Jr. Everyone who knew Mario, loved him. He was always there for anyone in need, no questions asked!
We will miss him dearly and look forward to seeing him again someday, In Gods time!.
He is preceded in death by a son, Mario Alejo Cantu Jr.; his parents, Cruz and Ascension Cantu; four siblings, Nereo Cantu, Maria Magdalena Cantu, Adolfo Cantu, Maria Antonia Pena
Mr. Cantu is survived by his wife of 60 years, Olivia S. Cantu; a daughter, Michelle (Andres) Gonzalez; a daughter in law, Melissa Cantu; three grandchildren, Patrick David Gonzalez, Rebecca Sophia Gonzalez, Zienna Leigh Cantu; and five siblings, Oscar Martin (Josie) Cantu, Cruz (Oralia) Cantu III, Carlos (Concepcion) Cantu, Raul (Diana) Cantu, Janie (Romeo) Cuellar.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., with a 6 p.m. rosary Thursday, February 26, 2026, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, February 27, 2026, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
