Margarito “Mike” Niño, 94, peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at Alfredo Gonzalez Texas State Veterans Home in McAllen. Mike was born on June 7, 1931, in Edinburg, Texas. He lived a long and fruitful life and was devoted to his family whom he cherished. He was proud to have valiantly served his country in Korea while enlisted in the United States Army. Upon returning to the U.S., he started his career with H.E. Butt and Company where he was part of their management team for close to thirty years. Mike’s favorite past times included woodworking and was always ready for a family (or friends) gathering to celebrate birthdays, holidays or just any fun occasion that came up. As many of you know, he also loved working on Sudoku puzzles which he worked on until the day before he joined our Lord.
In 1955, Mike married the love of his life, Celia Peña Niño, who survives him. He is also survived by their three children: Rachel (Andy Villarreal) Niño, Edward Niño and Yvette (Steven) Donovan; seven grandchildren: Stacey Coronado, Michael Donovan, John Niño, Roberto Niño, Christopher Villarreal, Anita Villarreal, Angelina Villarreal; three great-grandchildren: Jonah Williams, Nolan Gomez, Oliver Villarreal and his brother, Carlos (Yolanda) Niño, of San Antonio, Texas, whom he lovingly referred to as his “partner” and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by one granddaughter, Stephanie Ann Coronado; his parents Eduardo Niño and Eulalia Jasso Niño; four siblings: Hilario Niño, Eduardo Niño, Jr., Maria Zamora and Beatriz Bonner.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., with a 6:30 p.m. rosary on Monday, July 14, 2025, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. The funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Edinburg. Interment will follow at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Pallbearers will be Edward Niño, Michael Donovan, John Niño, Christopher Villarreal, Gonzalo Peña, Brett Bonner, Carlos Niño, Jr and Orlando Zamora. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jonah Williams, Nolan Gomez and Oliver Villarreal. Military honors will be conducted by VFW Post 7473 of Elsa.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
