With deep love and sorrow, we announce that Lydia “Prieta” Hernandez, 88, entered into eternal rest on Friday, October 10, 2025, at South Texas Health System in McAllen.
Lydia was born in Linares, Nuevo León, and spent several years working as a telephone operator at Teléfonos Mexicanos. Later, she moved to Aurora, Illinois, where she lived and worked for many years. After retiring in 1988, she enjoyed a fulfilling life, traveling between Houston, Texas; Alamo, Texas; Linares, Nuevo León; and Monterrey, Nuevo León.
Known affectionately as "Prieta" by those closest to her, Lydia was a woman of quiet strength, deep faith and boundless love. Her heart was always open — especially to the many nieces and nephews she helped raise as her own. Her generosity, quick-witted jokes and vivid storytelling left a lasting impression on everyone blessed to know her.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Arnulfo and Maria de Jesus Garza, as well as six beloved siblings: Rodolfo Guadalupe Garza (Linares, Nuevo León), Maria del Socorro Garza de Medina (Monterrey, Nuevo León), Eduardo Garza (Monterrey, Nuevo León), Jose Luis Garza (Linares, Nuevo León), Minerva Garza de Gutierrez (Alamo, Texas), and Humberto Garza (Monterrey, Nuevo León).
Lydia leaves behind a legacy of love in the hearts of those she touched. She is survived by her brother, Leonardo Garza and his wife Frances (Alamo, Texas); her sisters-in-law, Juanita “Johnny” Garza de Garza (Humberto) and Celia Tamez de Garza (Jose Luis); and a large extended family of nieces and nephews— all of whom she cherished deeply.
Family and friends are invited to honor Lydia’s life on Monday, October 13, 2025, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan, with visitation beginning at 5 p.m. and a rosary to be recited at 6 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Alamo. Lydia will be laid to rest through cremation at Memorial Cremation Center in Edinburg.
Her love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
