Edinburg - Jimmy Gomez, 79, passed away on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
Jimmy Gomez was the beloved youngest of eight children born to Sara and Santiago Gomez. He entered this world on January 2, 1947, in Los Indios, Texas. He graduated from Harlingen High School. After high school, Jimmy enlisted in the United States Air Force.
Jimmy served 20 years in the United States Air Force, including 15 distinguished years in Special Operations as a United States Air Force Combat Controller. He served with honor and was stationed at multiple special operations squadrons throughout the United States and across the globe. As a Combat Controller, Jimmy was a master parachutist and High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) operator. He embodied the very best of the Combat Control Community. He deployed numerous times throughout his career and was recognized for his exceptional character, courage, and dedication to his fellow servicemen. Jimmy concluded his military service as an Air Traffic Controller. He retired with the deep respect and admiration from all who served alongside him.
After honorably retiring from the Air Force, Jimmy earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Texas-Pan American. He spent the next decade as a devoted teacher and golf coach with the Donna Independent School District. Jimmy was inspired to uplift and help anyone he could.
Beyond his many accomplishments, Jimmy will forever be remembered for his love and devotion to his wife, Sylvia. He was an unconditionally loving father to his eldest daughter, Shannon. He was a protector and cherished best friend to his daughter, Norma. He will always be a hero to his son, Jaime. Jimmy will be forever missed. However, Jimmy’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to have known him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Santigao Genaro Gomez and Sara Garcia.
Mr. Gomez is survived by his wife, Sylvia Gomez; three children, Shannon Leigh (+David) Breeding, Norma Lamar Gomez, and Jaime Manuel (Stephanie) Gomez; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A Graveside service will take place at 2 p.m. Friday, April 17, 2026, at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission.
