Irma Gómez, 85, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at Round Rock Medical Center, leaving behind a legacy of education, service, and dedication to the communities she loved.
Irma was a proud graduate of Edinburg High School. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education and later a master’s degree in education from Pan American University. She began a teaching career in Brownsville that would span many years and touch countless lives and continued her work in education with McAllen ISD. After a long and distinguished career as an educator, Irma retired from McAllen ISD, where she also served as an administrator. Education was more than a profession to Irma, it was a calling. She believed deeply in the importance of learning and in providing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.
Throughout her life, Irma also devoted herself to serving her community. She was a co-founder of Area One Special Olympics, helping create opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities to participate, compete, and thrive. She also served as director of the Monte Alto Adult Learning Center, continuing her commitment to education and lifelong learning.
Irma was equally passionate about making her community a better place. She was proud to have served on the committees involved in starting the Keep McAllen Beautiful initiative, contributing her time and energy to efforts that would improve and beautify the community she called home.
In addition to her professional and community accomplishments, Irma cherished her family above all else. She was married to Arturo Gómez, and together they celebrated just over 50 years of marriage before his passing in 2018. Their life together was a testament to love, partnership, and commitment.
Irma will be remembered for her dedication to education, her generous spirit, her commitment to serving others, and the many lives she touched throughout her career and community service. Her legacy will live on through the students she taught, the programs she helped establish, the communities she served, and, most importantly, the family and loved ones who will carry her memory forward.
Mrs. Gómez is preceded in death by her husband, Arturo Gómez Jr.; brother, Juan Antonio Gonzales; brother-in-law, Adrian Guerra; and nephew, Carlos Lopez.
Mrs. Gómez is survived by her three sons, Jorge Arturo (Renee) Gómez, Martin Jaime (Victoria) Gómez, and Marco Antonio (Stacey) Gómez; five grandchildren, Gabriela Cadena, McKenzie Gómez, Sophia Gómez, John Michael Gómez, and Hunter Gómez; and three siblings, Trinidad (Sylvia) Gonzales Jr., Norma (Domingo) Lopez, and Sylvia Guerra.
