SPC LEONARDO "EDDIE" GUERRA, JR.

FORT BENNING/GA - SPC Leonardo "Eddie" Guerra, Jr., 41, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 in Fort Benning, Georgia.

Eddie was born in McAllen and attended PSJA High School. While in high school, he was involved with the US Army JROTC program where he excelled and reached the rank of Battalion Commander. Eddie was involved with the PSJA Thespians where he also excelled to Drama Director. Eddie attended UT Pan American for three years, getting involved with restaurant management. In February of 2006 he joined the U.S. Army and was deployed to Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After basic training, Eddie was sent to Fort Lee, Virginia. He was assigned to the Third Infantry Division in Fort Benning, Georgia. While stationed there, Eddie's unit, the 233rd was deployed to Iraq for a 15 month tour. While in Iraq, he was promoted to SPC (E-4). After a successful tour in Iraq, SPC Guerra and his unit returned to Fort Benning, Georgia. He was an outgoing and dedicated soldier, husband, father, son, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed and remembered as a person who would do anything he could to help, if help was needed. We miss you and pray that you are at peace now.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Santos and Aurelia Guerra; and maternal grandparents, Samuel and Josefa Suarez.

SPC Guerra is survived by his wife, Dawn Guerra; a son, Gabriel M. Guerra; a daughter, Christiana Angelica Guerra, all of Fort Benning, Georgia; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonardo Erasmo Guerra, Sr. of Pharr; two brothers, Michael Santos Guerra of Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Erik Guerra of McAllen; and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary, today, August 13, 2009 at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, August 14, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment will follow at San Juan Cemetery with full military honors.
