GUADALUPE BARRIENTES

EDINBURG - With deep sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Guadalupe Barrientes, 90, on Friday, May 8, 2026, after a long courageous battle with illness.

Guadalupe was born in Pharr, Texas to Miguel Mendoza and Atanacia Castillo. She was the oldest of eight children. When mom was young, she and her family traveled up North as Migrant workers. Years later, she became a schoolteacher for the Hidalgo County Head Start Program and also opened a business (Barrientes and Sons Drive-In Grocery) alongside her husband.

She enjoyed being outdoors working in her garden and having family over at our home so she could prepare delicious meals, as she was known as an excellent cook. Mom also never passed up a good garage sale.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jesus Barrientes; son, Ricardo Barrientes; daughter, Alicia Barrientes; and grandson, David Jesus Ojeda.

Mrs. Barrientes is survived by her four children, Eloy Barrientes, Estella Villarreal, Mariela Craig, Esmeralda Barrientes; five grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers will be Eloy Barrientes Jr., Juan Miguel Barrientes, Joel Jesus Barrientes, Justin Pedraza, Jorge Enrique Villarreal Jr., and Roberto Davin Villarreal Jr.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ryan Lee Villarreal and Randon Enrique Villarreal.

The family wishes to thank Opus Care Hospice for their compassionate care, Chaplain Marcos Rodriguez, Health Care Unlimited, HHN Healthcare, and First Care E.M.S.

A special thank you to Dr. Nelson R. Kalaf, Priscilla and his entire staff, whose unwavering support and care never faltered.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. with a 6 p.m. rosary Monday, May 11, 2026, at Memorial Funeral Home, 311 E. Expressway 83 in San Juan. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2026, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Pharr. Interment will follow at Palm Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.

Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
