EDINBURG – Minerva “Minnie” Gorena, 75, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, September 26, 2018, in Mandeville, Louisiana where she resided for the past 7 years.
She was born in Edinburg, Texas and graduated from Edinburg High School. Minerva received a BA Degree from Pan American College. She was an elementary school teacher in the Rio Grande Valley before moving to Austin, Texas where she worked for the Education Service Center Region 13 and later for the Texas Education Agency in the Bilingual Department. While there, she earned a Master’s Degree from The University of Texas at Austin. Minerva additionally earned a Doctor of Education Degree from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C. while pursuing her professional career. She lived in Arlington Virginia and was employed as Associate Director of the National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education (InterAmerica Research Associates) before working for The George Washington University as Director for the National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition (NCELA). She worked there until her retirement.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Humberto and Eva B. Gorena.
Minerva is survived by her sister, Dina (Roy Lee Jr.) Hinojosa; her nephews, Patrick (Alison) Hinojosa, Phillip (Wendy) Hinojosa; her niece, Jeneva Hinojosa; and her grandnieces and grandnephews, Alexis, Alex, Jacob and Kathryn Hinojosa.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Thursday, October 4, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, October 5, 2018, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens in McAllen.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer’s Association in Minerva’s name.
Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
