ERNESTO GONZALEZ

SAN JUAN - Ernesto Gonzalez, 83, died Monday, February 23, 2009, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen.

Born in Laredo, Mr. Gonzalez had lived in San Juan most of his life and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on September 22, 1950 and was honorably discharged on September 4, 1952. He served during the Korean Conflict and received the Korean Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars and the U N Service Medal. He retired from the Texas Highway Department after 30 years of service.

Mr. Gonzalez is survived by his wife, Jovita Gonzalez, of San Juan; four children, Ernesto (Lavinia) Gonzalez, Jr., Deborah (Robert Jr.) Ybanez, both of Pharr, Mary Cavazos, of San Juan, Patricio (Velma) Gonzalez, of Donna; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Maria Antonieta Elizondo, of Laredo.

A rosary was held Monday, February 23, 2009 at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., today, February 24, 2009 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan. Interment will follow at Val Verde Memorial Gardens in Donna. Military honors will be conducted American Legion Post 101 of Pharr.

Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan.
