Gilbert Muzquiz, 82, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen. Born in Corpus Christi, he spent most of his life in Pharr as a caring husband, supportive father, and proud grandfather.
Gilbert was a devoted member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in McAllen and served as a Eucharistic minister in many parishes.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Gilberto and Rosa Muzquiz.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 59 years, Irma Guerra Muzquiz; his children, Yvonne Muzquiz, Marlene Muzquiz-Doerrie, and Gilberto Rene (Adriana) Muzquiz; his grandchildren, Gianna and Genevieve Fazio, and Gilberto Alejandro, Victor, and Nicolas Muzquiz; his brothers, Arturo (Marianna) Muzquiz and Robert (Karen) Muzquiz; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Known throughout the community as “Coach”, Gilbert dedicated his life to mentoring young athletes in little league football, baseball, track, and basketball. He believed deeply in discipline, teamwork, and encouragement, and he touched countless families through his guidance and support.
A lifelong advocate for civil rights, Gilbert served in numerous roles within the Democratic Party and worked tirelessly to uplift the Mexican-American community. His commitment to justice and equality was evident in both his words and actions.
Professionally, Gilbert excelled as a Certified Public Accountant and later represented several Major League Baseball players as an agent, blending his expertise with his passion for the sport. A devoted New York Yankees fan, he cherished traveling with family to attend games and World Series events as a summer family tradition.
Gilbert “Coach” Muzquiz leaves behind a legacy of mentorship, advocacy, and love. His influence will continue to be felt by the youth he guided, the community he strengthened, and the family he adored.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m., with a 6 p.m. rosary on Monday, February 9, 2026, at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in McAllen. Cremation will take place at Memorial Cremation Center in Edinburg, with private interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
