Anita Garza, 100, went home to our Lord Monday, May 28, 2018, surrounded by her loving family at Amara Hospice.
She was born Tuesday, January 1, 1918 in Santa Anita Ranch to Antonio and Estefana Mercado. Mrs. Garza lived in the San Manuel community most of her life and was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church. She was employed at Brewster School Cafeteria for 16 years where she also served as cafeteria manager before her retirement in 1988. Anita lived through the Great Depression and raised nine children. She was an expert seamstress, quilter and was known as the Pan de Campo Queen of San Manuel. She passed down traditions that the Garza family will continue for the rest of their lives.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Antonio Garza Sr.; her son, Eudalio Garza; two grandsons, Jerry Cavazos and Marcos Garza; 11 sisters; and four brothers.
Mrs. Garza is survived by her four sons, Victor (Ascencion) Garza of Linn, Benito (Otila) Garza of Corpus Christi, Antonio (Irene) Garza Jr. of Pharr, and Juan Manuel (Janie) Garza of Edinburg; her four daughters, Teodora V. (Joaquin) Cavazos, Enedina (†Paul) Garcia, both of McAllen, Enedelia (Jesus Jr.) Gutierrez, and Bonnie (†Oscar) Flores, both of Linn; 24 grandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Garza of Memphis, TX; a brother-in-law, Luciano Guerra of Pharr; and a sister-in-law, Gloria Mercado of Encino, TX.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 31, 2018, at St. Anne's Catholic Church in San Manuel. Interment will follow at Santa Anita Cemetery in San Manuel.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Benito Garza, Adrian Garza, Carlos Cavazos, Edward Garza, Sonny Gutierrez, Noe Garcia, and Danny Garza.

Funeral services are under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Edinburg.
