ERNESTO FLORES CHAVEZ
EDINBURG – Ernesto Flores Chavez, 91, went home to our Lord Thursday, May 3, 2018, at McAllen Heart Hospital.
Mr. Chavez was born and raised in Edinburg. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II. Anyone that knew “Grandpa” knew that he was a loving and caring man. He would go out of his way to help anyone in need and never expect anything in return. One of his many pastimes that he loved was hunting and fishing, activities that he shared with his children. He was also a big boxing fan. He always treated everyone equally which made his nieces and nephews feel as if they were also a part of his family. When he wasn’t hunting or fishing, he was telling jokes, singing or playing cards, memories that his grandchildren and great grandchildren will always carry with them. He loved all of his family and they loved him. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Pedro Chavez and Maria Elena Flores; three brothers, Adan, Pedro Jr., and Gilberto Chavez; and two sisters, Virginia Vasquez, and Ramona Chavez.
Mr. Chavez is survived by his loving wife, Mary E. Chavez; daughter, Sandra D. (Jose) Gaspar of Edinburg; three sons, Dennis R. (Cynthia) Chavez, Ernesto (Irma) Chavez, Jr., both of McAllen, Alonzo J. Chavez of Edinburg; grandchildren, Guy (Laura) Gaspar, Gabriel C. (Mary) Gaspar, David (Priscilla) Gaspar, Jessica N. (fiancé Ruben Hinojosa) Chavez, Michelle R. (Lance) Strand, Judith D. (Jonathan) De La Rosa, Javier D. (girlfriend Trina Esperante) Chavez, Victoria (Richard) McFarland, Andrea D. (Nicole) Espinoza; great-grandchildren, Christian J. (fiancée Brenda Salinas) Lozano, Marcus G. Gaspar, Mia D. Strand, Luke B. Strand, J.D. De La Rosa, Brandon De La Rosa, Tristan Calvillo, Devin Rios; sisters, Carolina Serda of New Boston, Michigan, Adela (Steve) Krakas of Harlingen; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. rosary Sunday, May 6, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Funeral service will take place at 9 a.m., Monday, May 7, 2018, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Edinburg. Interment will follow at Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. Pallbearers will be Guy Gaspar, Gabriel C. Gaspar, David A. Gaspar, Javier D. Chavez, Michael Espinoza, Larry Trevino, Keneth R. Rodriguez, Lance Strand.
