Eluteria was born in Martindale, Texas on April 18, 1925, to Lazaro and Francisca Gutierrez, she was the oldest of 6 children. At a young age, Eluteria became a migrant farm worker picking cotton with her parents and siblings throughout the state of Texas. She continued the migrant farmworker way of life and traveled throughout the northern part of the United States. They worked in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Nebraska, Idaho, Wisconsin, and South Dakota, where they picked sugar beets, cherries, strawberries, blueberries, asparagus, cucumbers, and potatoes. Throughout the hardships of being a migrant farmworker, Eluteria always instilled the value of hard work and perseverance to help secure a better life for her family. She constantly encouraged her loved ones to be kind and loving to each other, which was a staple to keeping her family together, especially during the hardest of times.
Eluteria G. Salazar will be remembered as always enjoying the outdoors, especially cultivating and gardening the many fruit and flowering plants that surrounded her home.
