Guillermina Cavazos Morin

September 30, 1928 — March 12, 2018

Guillermina “Mina” Cavazos Morin of San Juan, TX passed away in Austin, TX on Monday, March 12, 2018 of heart failure. She was 89. She was born in Pierce, Texas but her family moved shortly after to Mexico to escape the financial turmoil of the Great Depression. Her mother, Concepcion, passed away when Mina was a small girl, and Mina was separated from her family to go work as a live-in for a wealthy family in Monterrey Mexico. When she was in her late teens, her cousin Fidelia convinced her to return to the U.S. to seek a better life.
She lived briefly in the Bay Area in California where she worked in a rose nursery, a fitting job given her love of plants. She returned to Texas in the 1960s and settled in San Juan, TX where she met Pedro Morin, her future husband. Together they raised their son, Gavino, and ran a small convenience store/ice house in San Juan until the early 1980s when they semi-retired and started a snow cone stand. After her husband passed away in 2007, Mina moved to Austin to be close to her son who would take care of her until the end of her life.
Mina was a deeply compassionate woman who was pained by any injustice and who felt a moral obligation to stand with the oppressed. She was always thinking of others, putting everyone’s needs ahead of her own. A devout Catholic, Mina referred to Our Lady of Guadalupe as, “the mother she knew.” She was an active member of the St. John the Baptist Catholic parish. Mina was an avid gardener and enjoyed watching wild birds; she was especially fond of bluebonnets and hummingbirds. She was a warm and loving person who had a gentle way with everyone she met.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 43 years, Pedro Morin, and her brother Rodrigo Cavazos (Angelica). She is survived by her loving son, Gavino Morin, five sisters, Gertrudis Cavazos de Cavazos (Eulogio), Maria Concepcion “Conchita” Cavazos de Elizondo, Domitila McDonough, Magdalena Cavazos de Marquez, Raquel Cavazos de Sanchez (Javier), and one brother Ruben Cavazos (Margarita). Additionally, she is survived by many nieces and nephews who will dearly miss their “Tia Mina.”
The family deeply appreciates Aileen Rodriguez (niece), Maria Tovar, Jaime Mewis, Fr. Sang, and all the staff of Cella Bella Hospice for their warm and compassionate care, visits, and prayers.
Visitation will be on Thursday, March 15 from 5 to 9 pm with a rosary at 7 pm at Memorial Funeral Home in San Juan. Funeral service will be held on Friday March 16 at 10:00 am at St. John the Baptist Catholic Parish in San Juan, interment will follow at San Juan Cemetery.
