Mary Hughes Bush passed away at her residence in Edinburg, Texas on October 2, 2018 after a long battle with cancer. She was 82.
Mary was born in Boonville, New York on April 9, 1936, daughter of Cleo Hughes and Ruth (Harvey) Hughes and granddaughter of Ralph and Doll Hughes. She grew up in Boonville, NY, but travelled extensively as an Air Force wife.
She graduated from Boonville Central High School in 1953. She then attended Pan American College and later Pan American University here in the Valley where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English. She taught in many Valley school districts and after 20 years retired from Edinburg CISD.
Mary and Guy C. Bush were united in marriage on July 11, 1979, sharing a long and rewarding time together as Husband and Wife and as best friends. She is survived by him, as well as her children, Mark (Lori) Eddy, Old Forge, NY, Bethann Dooley, McAllen, Texas, Mary Eddy, Universal City, Texas, David J. Eddy, and his fiancée, Nanette Cosbey, Clarence, NY and a sister, Nancy Scherz, Boonville, NY. Mary took great pride and happiness in her eight grandchildren: Olin (Amy) Eddy, John (Heather) Eddy, Catherine (Jonathan) Easton, David A. (Michelle) Eddy, Hayden Dooley, Meaghan (Arturo) Alvarez, Channing (Mark) ZuaZua, Austin Eddy and 11 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Cleo and Ruth Hughes and her first husband, Lt. Col. David H. Eddy.
Mary was a member of and attended First United Methodist Church in Boonville, NY, and attended First United Methodist Church in Edinburg, Texas where she served as a Sunday School teacher and a member of United Methodist Women. She was a member of the order of the Eastern Star #473 where she was the pianist. She was an avid reader and was a member of the McAllen Book Lover’s Club.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, October 10, 2018, at Memorial Funeral Home, 208 E. Canton in Edinburg. Graveside service will take place at 10 a.m. Thursday, October 11, 2018, at Valle De La Paz Cemetery (Hargill Cemetery) in Hargill.
The family wishes to thank Amara Hospice and its caring and thoughtful staff, and Angelina Sabado for her dedication and caring of Mary.
